The fragrance of Nag Champa has fascinated generations upon generations for years, blending history, spirituality and sensory delight. Join us as our perfumers explore its aromatic world and history, and introduce our Floriental Pathcouli diffuser oil, which was artfully echos the essence of its peaceful, pleasant, floral, earthy and sugary fragrance profile.
Indigenous to India and Nepal and deeply rooted in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, this earthy, floral and natural scent, known as Nag Champa, is sacred to the Hindu god, Vishnu.
For centuries untold, it has been burned as incense in monasteries during sacred meditation and mindfulness ceremonies.
Today, perfumers rely on its mystical, scintillating and sultry character for its exotic, ambery formulations.
Nag Champa is hand-crafted and comprised of essential oils blended from diverse florals, resins, gums and pure scents such as: mellow lavender; mysterious, lush champaca (frangipani); noble vanilla; woody, spicy cardamom; warm cinnamon; soft intimate saffron, slightly musky black pepper, creamy sandalwood and the binding, terrine resin from the halmaddi tree, which helps the incense sustain a lingering and pleasurable burn.
Its evolution as a perfume has brought about the inclusion of additional ingredients which include: passionate, musky, blooming rose oils; fresh, sugary orange blossom and narcotic, sugary and erotic ylang-ylang.
The unforgettable fragrance of Nag Champa is mostly described as peaceful, pleasant, floral, earthy and sugary with a touch of balsamic. It is sometimes compared to rich and intense jasmine.
At its redolent core, is champaca, a captivating, luminous flower within the magnolia family.
Velvety and enchanting, this scent that is so deeply enmeshed with the cultural and spiritual tapestry of the Far eastern corners of the world also whispers of the forest primeval and the dense woodlands of Mother Earth.
The exact history of Nag Champa incense is not known, but most historians agree that it was likely created in the Tibetan monasteries where monks combined various spices, herbs and resins that helped them focus and enhance their spiritual exercises.
Each formula was slightly different and kept secret from the outside world. It was later introduced to India, where it gained immense popularity among both Hindus and Buddhists.
Ingredients were ground into a paste and then rolled onto bamboo sticks. The resulting incense was then dried in the sun and used for religious ceremonies, meditation, and relaxation.
It was utilized in ancient times as an aid in meditation and yoga and as a general air freshener and room fragrance.
In the 1960s, Nag Champa gained prominence outside of India and became part of both the American hippie and counter cultures.
At this time, the incense was developed using synthetic instead of natural ingredients.
These included: floral lavender, noble vanilla and passionate, erotic musk. Its wild and robust nature crashed into the music scene of the day when it became the incense of choice that was burned during the iconic concerts of Bob Dylan, and The Grateful Dead.
Although there are many who have never even heard the name, Nag Champa, before, this incense fragrance has never fallen out of vogue.
Today, it remains one of the most desirable, albeit not most advertised, scent developed by the perfumers for use in fine perfumes, candles, soaps and diffuser oils to name just a few, much like our Floriental Patchouli fragrance blend (pictured below).
It's use throughout many products has to do with the fact that it is a powerful de stressor and mood lifter and widely used in aromatherapy practices.
Nag Champa symbolizes gold, beauty, cleansing, purification, luxury and grace.
Its use in incense spiritually represents earthly connections and a clean, safe place within which to meditate and relax.
Its flowers have always been sacred offerings for the Indian gods and are believed to promote peace and harmony.
The name, Nag Champa, is derived from two Sanskrit words, meaning serpent (nag) and flower(champa).
In Hindu mythology, snakes are symbols of transformation, cosmic energy and spiritual awakening.
The seven chakras run down the spine and represent the centers of spiritual power within the human body.
Scent activates and balances the chakras, and is a highly effective tool in maintaining mental clarity and well-being.
Lower chakras, the earth and root, are the most innate and stem directly from the vitality of the earth.
They are associated with cleansing, and serve as vehicles that transport the human psyche from an unconscious state into the highest level of spiritual experience; namely the realm of consciousness.
Nag Champa is associated with this root chakra and helps to maintain strength, stability, a creative spirit and sense of sexuality.
Fragrance formulators respect Nag Champa’s soothing, earthy and floral character and the fact that the comforting, tranquil ambiance it creates is unsurpassed.
In the world of aromatherapy, it is believed to balance the chakras, and its alluring dry down always includes creamy, aromatic sandalwood.
This scent is often used to infuse a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere in both homes and businesses.
While incense and fragrance are related, they remain two entirely different concepts.
The aroma of incense can only occur while the sticks burn, whereas perfume emits its essence without intervention.
Incense is also always associated with smoke, which is said to serve as a conduit that eliminates impurities and creates a sacred environment.
Perfume resonates differently, infusing bodies rather than surroundings with an aura of refined scent.
Nag Champa is found in oils, candles, soaps and lotions as well as perfume.
Fragrance ingredients will vary depending on the manufacturer, but always include sandalwood and magnolia.
