The art of crafting is as old as time itself.
Ancient populations constructed all kind of objects from materials found in the natural world ranging from wooden baskets, aromatic incense to precious jewelry, balms and lotions made from indigenous stones, fragrant plants and seeds.
Crafting is intensely personal, rewarding and time consuming.
Deepak Chopra once remarked that when you do what you love, there is no concept of time.
It stands still and forsaken in the human mind, which becomes enmeshed within the details and challenges of loving creation.
When a fragrance is introduced to a crafting project, its goal is to memorialize the product, whatever it may be.
Whether creating a new cologne or perfume, soap, candle or any other item, fragrance oils will add a new dimension to its ultimate appeal.
It has the power to offer distinction, mask the smell of other ingredients, inspire moods and evoke emotions.
Fragrance oils, namely ours, have become a boon to crafters everywhere because they embrace the human imagination with their evocative and diverse scents.
Close your eyes and you are in a magical rainforest teeming with hidden life under wet, green and fragrant folds or in a bakery with the aromas of delectable, lush, gourmand vanilla concoctions streaming through your mind.
Crafters also love our oils for their cost-effective, long-lasting scents and because we offer
fragrance oil gift sets for sampling a variety of options.
How To Get Started
To begin at the beginning is often akin to being in a strange land with no knowledge of either language or terrain.
Still, it is workable place of trial and error that includes much thought and direction.
When choosing a fragrance for crafting, its complexity, longevity, and versatility are important factors as well as how the specific notes work in tandem to create a distinct effect.
Generally speaking, the more sophisticated the layers of notes, the better.
Different crafts work better with some scents than others and the possibilities are infinite.
If you are just getting started, put on your patience work clothes and expect to spend many hours experimenting.
The end result will be a fragrance that truly speaks to you and no one else.
1. Start Small
This is advisable, especially for beginners, because it allows for testing the compatibility of the oil with the new product without purchasing a larger amount, which might not be suitable in the long run.
2. Carefully Measure the Recommended Amount
Don’t get carried away with a beloved fragrance or the end product could turn out to be overwhelmingly scented and a potential irritant to skin.
3. Store Fragrance Oils In A Cool, Dark Place
This is important because exposure to heat and light degrades the complex structure of molecules within the fragrance oil and causes it to lose its potency.
Sunlight and extreme temperatures can transform your dream fragrance into a weak and unpleasant concoction, while a cool, dark place ensures its enduring quality and consistency.
4. Understanding Fragrance Oil Notes
Like all good students, you must do your homework and this means learning as much as you can about the nature and power of the top, middle and base notes of fragrance oils.
In conjunction with this comes the knowledge and use of the appropriate ratio of materials designated for the specific project you are working on.
5. Blending Multiple Fragrance Oils
The most effective blending hierarchy of fragrance is to begin with the strongest base note, then add the middle notes and end with the lighter top facets.
6. Use A Carrier Oil For Skin Care Products
If creating a product intended for skin contact like soap, lotion or bath salts, you must dilute your fragrance oil in a carrier oil such as: coconut oil or jojoba oil. This will prevent skin irritation.
7. Always Do A Patch Test
That old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure is no more evident than this situation.
Before applying any fragrance blend to a large portion of skin, do a patch test on a small part to check for allergic reactions.
These specific oils have the quality that is treasured by crafts people.
Their high levels of concentration provide a bang for your buck because less is always needed to compose a potent scent.
Their longevity of scent is a vital factor in crafting candles and soaps.
If you are just getting started, put on your patience work clothes and expect to spend many hours experimenting with diverse scents.
The end result will be a fragrance that truly speaks to you and no one else.
We manufacture all of our fragrance oils at our manufacturing facility in Pittsburgh, PA, guaranteeing purity, concentration and safety.
They are easy to incorporate into many crafting projects and they are perfect for beginners because they don’t require complicated techniques of application or chemical testing.
The following represent the most commonly crafted products using these fragrance oils that are based on years of research about market preferences for various crafts.
Fragrance Oils For Candles
Some of the most relaxing fragrance oils for candles include: smooth, mellow lavender, lush vanilla and woody, aromatic bamboo.
Successful usage for candle creation requires a rate of 6-10% of the total wax weight.
For best results, cool the fragrance oil to about 60-65C (140-149 F) before adding it to the wax.
This will help maintain its composition. Distribute evenly and stir gently and thoroughly. At this point, you can pour it into molds.
Soap Making Scents
Favored fragrance oils for soap usually include: cool peppermint, fresh lemon, and minty, crisp scents.
Cold process soap is the conventional method, which requires blending animal or plant-based fat or oil with sodium hydroxide lye and then adding colorants and fragrance oils using 0.75-1.5 ounces per pound of soap base.
This process causes a chemical reaction called saponification, which takes up to 48 hours to complete. It is advisable to do a test batch first to ensure stability and color.
To make melt and pour soap, first liquefy a soap base, then add fragrance and color and pour it into a mold.
You must add the fragrance oil after the base has melted but before it completely cools ( a temperature around 55-60°C or 130-140°F), at about 0.5-1 ounce per pound of soap.
Mix well before pouring into mold to avoid the formation of oil pockets.
Colognes And Perfumes
Our perfume dupe fragrance oils are rich and versatile. Any selection will ensure the creation of a perfume that is balanced with a long lasting throw.
Whether used in perfumes, candles, or personal care products, fragrance oils are composed of complex mixtures of aromatic compounds, which can be categorized into three main types:namely, top, heart and base notes.
The most popular fragrance families for colognes include: floral, musky and citrus scents.
Professional results can be achieved with a blended ratio of 80% fragrance oil to 20% perfume grade alcohol.
Use 1-2% of the total weight of dry ingredients.
Mix with up to 3% of a favorite fragrance oil, which will allow for an even distribution.
Fragrance is vital to the hedonistic experience of bath bombs, and some oils can increase feelings of well being and comfort as well.
Use a carrier oil such as epsom salts for best results, as this help to disperse the fragrance throughout the bath water.
Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of epsom salts to bath water.
Other commonly used carrier oils in bath bombs include lighter ingredients like sweet almond and earthy grape seed as well as denser scents like green avocado and tropical, milky coconut.
Potpourri or Sachets
Add a few drops of fragrance oil to dried plant materials and mix well so that all elements are coated evenly.
Spread the potpourri mixture out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and allow 12 hours to dry.Pour into eye-catching, air-tight glass jars so they can also double as bath decor.
For sachets, combine ½ cup dry white rice, ¼ cup epson salt, and 18-to 20 drops of fragrance oil. The epsom salt absorbs the oil and makes the sachet scent last longer.
Allow to dry before filling the sachet bags.
Diffuser Blends
Not all diffusers can work with fragrance oils as most are designed to diffuse essential oils.
Diffusers that can work with fragrance oils state so specifically in their manufacturers guidelines.
Any Air Scent fragrance oil you use must first be diluted with either water or alcohol before adding it to the diffuser.
Experiment with different combinations of fragrance oils to create custom diffuser blends.
Room Sprays
Using distilled water, fill a glass spray bottle ¾ of the way.
Add enough witch hazel to fill the rest of the bottle. This aids in the break down of the oil and water and helps the scent to last for a longer period of time.
Blend 20-40 drops of fragrance oils and replace the lid. Shake well. Blend 1.6 ounces of the base with 0.4 ounces of fragrance oil to make a 2 ounce solution.
